20 years of efforts, three years of construction, and finally, on the 19th of September 2014 the official opening of Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre was held. The latest acquisition of the city of Gdansk, is the first, built from a scratch after the World War II theatre in this city. Aside from the objects architecture, being the work of an Italian architect Renato Rizzi, also the technologically advanced design and a wooden interior impresses the viewers’ eye. Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre is the only theater in the world fitted with a sunshine roof. Interestingly, the complete opening of the roof weighing 160 tons takes only 3 minutes.
In this modern facility the P.S. TEATR company performed work concerning the stage mechanics and lighting equipment of the technological lighting of the stage . Thing that particularly distinguishes Shakespeare Theatre from other theaters is the stage construction. It has been designed so that it can be set in three positions: with an opened roof – the Elizabethan style, in the traditional setting where the audience is located in front of the stage and in the arena layout, where the scene is surrounded by the audience. The stage mechanics allows it to be moved even in the presence of actors. The audience also is mobile, and depending on the setting, it can accommodate up to 600 spectators.
P.S. TEATR equipped the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre in the technological lighting of the stage. Inside you will find traditional theatrical luminaires by Spotlight with the PC lens: Vario 12 (with the 4° – 63° optics) and Vario 25 (with the 4° – 66° optics). A total of 44 devices of this type were mounted. Constructed entirely of lightweight and durable aluminum profiles are designed for 650, 1000, or 1200W incandescent lamps, depending on your needs. User safety system provides automatic circuit breaker, disconnecting power at the housing opening. The delivery included also 14 profile luminaires Figura Zoom 25 with a 9° – 25° zoom range, a total of 47 profile Philips SELECON SPX 15-35 and 25-50 reflectors, 3 Vedette reflectors with the 7° -18° optics, 4 SELECON PL3 reflectors with Fresnel lens, based on three RGBW modules with a total power of 360W and 15° – 55° optics.
Among the LED based devices, we can find 6 DTS Delta 8 R floodlights, where the light source are 36 RGB LEDs, 4 Selecon PL Cyc 2 asymmetric RGBW floodlights, 20 LED FL IP 50 working floodlights by Eurolite and 4 SL Bar 640 by Showline with the possibility of an independent color and intensity changes for each pair of LEDs. Moving heads were also a part of the fitted equipment. Here, we have applied the Vari*Lite solutions -2 pieces of VLX and VL 1100 TS ERS each.
Lighting control in Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre is supported by the ChamSys MagicQ 300 Pro 2010 Execute console with an extra visualizer and two, 17 „ SVGA monitors. This device has a programmed ability to work simultaneously in 32 DMX universes and to memorize 5000 Cues, 3096 pallets, and 1000 groups. The control room is also adapted for handling media servers – in this case it cooperates with the Axon Media Server by High End Systems.
There were 16, DMX controlled Pegasus dimmers 12 x 3.0kW by the Hungarian brand PLS. The possibility of easy installation of residual current protection is provided. Much oversized executive elements, as well as effective suppressor filters with an attenuation of 200 µm provide high assurance of trouble-free operation. Processor panel is easy to handle or exchange, fitted with plugs and suitable connectors. Convenient cable space inside the building allows the cable routing to be conducted either bottom or on top. The software allows for a simple and intuitive configuration.
Delivery included also 8 digital dimming panels blocks – Wallrack by Strand Lighting, and 2 double Ethernet / DMX Pathport C converters by Pathway – suitable for wall mount installations, equipped with a LCD display allowing for the device status monitoring.
In the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, based on the intelligent building management system HDL BUS Pro, we have implemented a control system of 232 non-regulated circuits (including 192 switching between regulated and non-regulated), 7 working circuits, as well as stage lighting. For this, there were: 21, 12-channel relay modules (SB-DN-R1216), one 4-channel DMX scene controller (SB-DN-48DMX), system Power Supply (SB-DN-PS2.4A), as well as a Logic Module (SB-DN-Logic960), applied. To be able to control the whole system, users have to their disposal a 7-inch Touch Screen (SB-WL-TS7) on the stage manager’s workplace, by the entrances – 3 panels activating (in groups) the working lighting, as well as a lighting operator’s control desk based on an all-in-one computer with an in-built 21-inch touch screen and the iRidium software.
Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre attracts attention not only by its outward appearance, but also by the original wooden interior. The modern stage lifts system, allows you to customize the theatre space to meet the needs of the acted performances. In addition, the theater has a conference space and a terrace where you can perform concerts and closed-circle performances.
